Happy New Year

A new gym routine and subscription to HelloFresh is an applaud-worthy way to kick off the new year. But then why do we always fall short of our best intentions—and sometimes fall very quickly? Big changes can be tough and expensive. Ring in this year by trying something that you’ll actually enjoy. Stamford is full of to-dos that can easily inspire a good habit.

1

A LATTE LOVE
Unwind and retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and rejuvenate with a steaming cup of coffee at Winfield Street Coffee (winfieldcoffee.com). This new coffee shop in downtown Stamford steams up the windows in the former Starbucks location by the Ferguson Library. The cafe offers North Carolina–based Culture Coffee along with baked goods, sandwiches and salads. And it might be a way to meet someone special—owner Breno Donatti met his wife over ten years ago in nearly the same exact spot as their café.

GROW NATURALLY
Winter is beautiful, but it can also mean dry skin, seasonal depression and other woes. Some people have found relief with CBD oils. Seventh Sense Botanical Therapy (shopseventhsense.com) carries high-quality, hemp-derived products designed for holistic-minded shoppers. The store, which opened up this past fall, is located in the Stamford Mall and follows the mantra: “Nurtured by Nature.” The brand incorporates nonpsychoactive hemp into their products, including topical oils, creams and balms as well as capsules and gummies at affordable prices.

POKE IS OK
Trying something new doesn’t have to mean rebuilding your wardrobe or deconstructing your personality. How about just trying poke (pronounced poh-kay)? Poke Harbor opened on Bedford Street this past fall. Poke, a Hawaiian dish of diced fish, rice and toppings, is both healthy and massively trending in the culinary circuit. Think of it as sushi in bowl form—kind-of what happened to our smoothies-turned-smoothie bowls, and that worked out well.

GIVE TO GET
Feel the warmth of giving back. Clothes to Kids of Fairfield County (clothestokidsoffairfieldcounty.org) makes it easy, welcoming both enthusiastic, friendly volunteers and donations. This Stamford-based organization collects clothes and accessories for children in need. Each eligible child can visit the CTKF Store (located at the Boys and Girls Club) twice in a twelve-month period and shop for a full week’s worth of school clothes: five tops, four bottoms, one dress (optional), one jacket, one pair of shoes and seven pairs of new underwear and socks.

PUT ON YOUR THINKING CAP
You’ve been watching the amazing renovations at the UConn Stamford (stamford.uconn.edu) campus. They seem to be happening all the time. Now, get in on the action by exploring its learning options. The school just launched its first computer-coding boot camp, which is open to the public. Not your thing? UConn is brimming with plenty of other opportunities and internships throughout the year.
